Armed person fires at Atlanta airport, authorities say

(CNN) – A loaded gun discharged at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Sunday, sending at least two passengers scrambling out of their terminal at a busy travel time.

Atlanta airport police, airport spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said, are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate the incident. No arrests have been made.

“Initial reports indicate a passenger opened fire inside Terminal 1, but there is no evidence at this time that indicates an active shooter,” the Atlanta Department of Public Safety said in a statement Sunday evening.

“A passenger transported by emergency medical crews to Hartsfield-Jackson Medical Center was hit by bullet fragments,” the statement said. No other injuries have been reported.

Patti Plank said she was in a window seat at about 2:30 p.m. ET when she felt an “extreme pain” in her lower back. It came from a bullet fragment.

“They were just telling us to stay on the floor and hold our hands up, because it looked like there were explosions in the departures area,” Plank told CNN affiliate WSB, which first reported the incident.

Plank was eventually told it was a “delayed flight that let loose a gun,” which was fired on the bus that takes people from the terminal to their gates.

Farbstein said at least two people were injured, including Plank. She suffered a broken toe, but was otherwise unhurt.

“We did not, during this incident, receive any reports of shots fired,” the statement from the Atlanta Department of Public Safety said.

The Atlanta airport is one of the busiest in the world, with more than 7 million passengers passing through each year.
