Pedestrian struck by bus in Toronto

(CNN) — A 27-year-old pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Monday after being hit by a bus in Toronto, according to the police.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with police, Toronto Police said in a statement.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital, according to the statement. The person sustained serious injuries and is being treated for trauma and fractures, police said.

“At this time police believe this to be a tragic accident,” said Toronto Police Const. Clint Stibbe in a statement.

Video from CNN affiliate CTV News showed emergency workers using a ladder to lift a car to help get the injured pedestrian out of the vehicle.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of this victim,” a spokesperson for Ontario Public Service Employees Union, which represents city workers, said in a statement to CNN.

“Our members are working to assist the police in all aspects of the investigation.”

Toronto Mayor John Tory also expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the pedestrian.

“I want to offer my deepest sympathies to all those who are involved, and especially to the victim’s family, as well as all first responders and the medical team treating this person in hospital,” he said in a statement.

This is the seventh vehicle collision in Toronto over the past week, according to CTV News.
